- Has received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Doctorate in Music Education from Indiana University.
- Has studied clarinet with D. Stanley Hasty, Leon Russianoff, and Bernard Portnoy and conducting with Dr. J. Marion Magill, Dr. Robert Klotman, and Ray Cramer.
- Director of Bands, joined the faculty of Furman University in the fall of 1993. In the Department of Music, his responsabilities include the directorship of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Basketball Band; instructor of instrumental conducting; instrumental music education coordinator; and instructor of clarinet.
- In the spring of 1999, was also appointed the Artistic Director of the Carolina Youth Symphony and the Director of the Summer Lakerside Concert Series in Greenville, SC.
- Was the Director of Bands at Yougnstown State University, the director of the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra and a clarinetist in the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, Ohio - USA.
- Was employed as an instrumental music teacher in the Durham (NC) County School system and was a member of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, NY, where served as a clarinetist.
- Is a member of the South Carolina Music Educators National Conference, the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, The International Clarinet Society, and the South Carolina Band Directors Association.
- Dr. Hicken is very active in the public school system, appearing as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the Southeast, Midwest, and Canada.
The North American, Maestro Leslie W. Hicken came to Brazil at the invitation of Maestro Nicolau Martins de Oliveira. He came to observe the work of the Volta Redonda Municipal Schools through the Project "From Steel to Classical".

From September 1, 2000, to September 30, 2000,he worked with the Volta Redonda String Orchestra and conducted the concert that took place on September 24, 2000.

As a clarinetist he performed a recital on September 23, 2000 with the pianist Sarah Higino.
With Maestro Nicolau he traveled to some Brazilian cities observing Bands and Orchestras, seeing concerts and making contact with Brazilian musicians.
